Review: MO Brew

In the words of the ever prominent Notorious B.I.G. “Mo’ money, mo’ problems.” Well, as recent college graduates, that’s an issue we really haven’t had to deal with yet. Instead, we live by the philosophy, “Mo toppings, less problems” and let me tell you, MO Brew on 39th Street takes this philosophy to heart.

Who needs money when you have loaded fries anyway?

We made a special visit to MO’s after hearing high praise of their brisket fries. These crinkle cut fries are loaded with toooooons of BBQ sauce, pickled jalapeños, bacon, cheese, and small pieces of brisket.

Loaded fries are the epitome of bar food. Add BBQ and it’s a KC resident’s dream.

We could only assume that these fries would be a BBQ sauce lover’s dream. For us though, we found all the sauce to be a little bit overwhelming. For some of the fries, it was basically all you could taste. Many of them became soggy from being drenched.

The other ingredients, unfortunately, were not much better. The pieces of bacon tasted a little cheap, with the texture similar to jerky. The cheese became rubbery as it cooled. And the brisket– which should have been the star of the show, was M.I.A. Really these fries were just plain underwhelming.

Is there anyone in the whole world who can’t appreciate a good game of Skee Ball? Not likely.

We, however, can’t knock MO’s for their environment. On nice days, they have large windows that open up to 39th Street, which makes it a great space for post-work happy hours.

Overall, these fries earn their highest marks for environment and experience. We didn’t feel like the quality lived up to the cost ($7.50 per plate), which is why they didn’t earn high marks for value. In the end, if you’re looking for a fun environment to lay back and drink a beer with friends, this may be your place. If you’re looking for a place to get great fries? Eh, maybe not so much.
